ABOUT ODL ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
OBJECTIVES OF ODL ORIENTATION
First-time ODL students are required to attend the ‘ODL Student Orientation’ begins on the week before the commencement of the academic session. The online orientation helps students to:
- Understand how the ODL class will be conducted throughout the semester.
- Familiarize students with the Learning Management System (LMS) used to support ODL teaching and learning.
- Familiarize students with Self-Instructional Material (SIM) that support ODL teaching and learning.
- Familiarize students with the other applications/systems used in supporting ODL teaching and learning such as UUM Portal, Library system, Turnitin, E-Assessment and Application, Registration and Administration System (ARAS).
- Outlines key strategies for success as an online student.
HOW ODL ORIENTATION WORKS
The program coordinator will lead the online orientation and briefs the students on the ODL educational model, basic learning skills and time management skills. Students also will be explained about the role of tutorials, assignments, and assessment methods applied in ODL programs. Our LMS platform is deployed using Moodle environment and students will be explained thoroughly on this. The program coordinator will brief the students the available student support system such as counselling, e-library and helpdesk system. Students also will be provided with the explanation on what it takes to be successful as a self- learner in the ODL site. You are also briefed and shown how to log on to the ODL site as well as the E-library. Students will also receive a briefing on the various administrative procedures including academy calendar and courses registrations.

ODL ORIENTATION key TERMS
Definition of ODL
ODL has been defined:
- A separation of students and teachers at any time and any place.
- Openness and flexible in term of access, curriculum, and structure of programs.
- A variety modes of delivery systems and learning resources.
Learning Management System (LMS)
The official online learning platform for Open & Distance Learning (ODL) can be accessed via https://learning-pace.uum.edu.my/pace_39. The LMS is deployed using Moodle and all courses offered by PACE UUM can be found in this platform. This LMS platform enables smooth course administration, delivery and management between lecturers and student.
This platform enables lecturers to upload learning materials such as lecture slides, assignments, online quizzes, and online examinations in facilitating ODL teaching and learning.
Active students will be provided with a user id and password to access this system. Courses registered by active students will appear at their dashboard automatically for the online learning process.
Self-Instructional Material (SIM)
SIM has been defined as an educational or learning material that facilitates self-directed learning. SIM is a learning material that ’teaches’ students by customizing the students’ needs. Hence, SIM should be developed to support ‘self-study’, ‘independent learning’, ‘individualized learning’, and so forth.
SIM is purposely to facilitate and assist students by providing the teacher in-built and support the students at every step. Students shall use the SIM to learn the course contents and prepare the assignments and examinations. SIM assists students to grow as independents learners with minimal or less support from lecturers or tutors. Therefore, SIM is developed based on sound instructional design principles which written in learner-friendly (conversational writing style and use simple language).
